Softball Splits with Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a CCAA doubleheader with Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Softball Field.

CSUSB emerged victorious 4-2 in game one, before falling short 1-0 in game two.

With the split, CSUSB moves to 13-13 overall on the season and 7-7 in the CCAA.

Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 4, Cal State East Bay 2

CSUSB used the power of the long ball in the first game of the day, getting all of its offense on home runs.

The Yotes hopped on the board first in the top of the first inning when senior Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) belted a two-run home run over the wall in center on the 12th pitch of the at-bat, giving CSUSB an early 2-0 advantage.

Cal State East Bay posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to answer right away, knotting the score at 2-2.

The game was still tied in the top of the fifth when junior Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) gave the Coyotes the lead for good, belting a solo home run to right center field to put CSUSB ahead 3-2.

An inning later, senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) gave the Yotes some insurance with a solo shot of her own, giving the game its final score of 4-2.

The Yotes scattered only six hits in the win, but three cleared the fence. Tosi led the Coyotes with a pair of hits in the win, including the sixth-inning long ball.

Reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) had another quality outing for CSUSB for CSUSB. She earned her seventh win of the season after allowing just the two earned runs on seven hits in the complete game.

Game 2 - Cal State East Bay 1, Cal State San Bernardino 0

CSUSB senior Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) was outdueled by East Bay's Marissa Quintero in the second game of the twinbill.

Cal State East Bay walked off the Coyotes by scoring the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an Ashlee Toy base hit up the middle.

The Coyotes were held hitless in the contest, and their only baserunners came on a pair of hit by pitches.

The Coyotes and Pioneers will conclude their series at Cal State East Bay on Saturday. First pitch in the doubleheader is slated for 10 a.m.
