Baseball Sweeps Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team swept their doubleheader against the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos Saturday afternoon at Scolinos Field.

With the sweep, the Coyotes improve to 14-7 and 6-5 in CCAA play.

Game 1: CSUSB 15, Cal Poly Pomona 3

The bats came alive for the Coyotes in their first game. Senior Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) put CSUSB on the board first with an RBI double, and graduate student Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) followed with an RBI double to left center, giving the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.

CSUSB continued to pile on the runs with a five-run second inning. Senior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) drove in two with a triple down the right field line to make it 4-0, and Vanneste added a three-run homer. Vanneste finished the day with four hits, just a triple shy of the cycle.

The Coyotes scored two more runs in the top of the third but went silent until the seventh inning when they erupted for six runs. Senior Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) contributed with a two-RBI single.

On the mound, senior Dylan O'Connor (Tacoma, Wash.) earned the win after pitching five innings, allowing two unearned runs while striking out seven. Junior Josh VerKuilen (Glendora, Calif.) closed the game with a four-inning save, allowing just one run.

Game 2: CSUSB 3, Cal Poly Pomona 0

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Ruiz delivered an RBI single to right field. Two batters later, junior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) added an RBI single through the left side, giving the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.

CSUSB added another run in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Hall

On the mound, sophomore Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.) threw a complete game in the seven-inning contest, allowing just three hits, walking no batters, and striking out seven. Remarkably, Rodriguez needed only 72 pitches to secure the victory.

Up next, the Coyotes conclude their series against the Broncos with a single game tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
