CHICO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team swept their doubleheader against the Chico State Wildcats in CCAA action Saturday afternoon at the Wildcat Softball Field.
CSUSB blanked Chico State 2-0 in game one, before run-ruling the Wildcats 11-2 in five innings in game two.
With the sweep, the Coyotes are 20-18 with a 12-12 record in CCAA play.
Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 2, Chico State 0
CSUSB struggled offensively early on, managing just two hits through the first four innings—a single in the top of the first by senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) and another in the third by graduate student Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.).
The Coyotes broke through in the fifth when junior Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) doubled and was later driven in by senior Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.), giving CSUSB a 1-0 lead.
The Yotes added an insurance run in the sixth, with junior Alex Hooper (Auburn, Calif.) coming in as a pinch runner, and scoring on a Brazill RBI fielder's choice. That proved to be enough, as Chico State was unable to capitalize on its opportunities.
In the circle, junior Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) delivered her first complete-game shutout of the season, earning her seventh win. She allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out four.
Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 11, Chico State 2 (5 Innings)
CSUSB struck first in the top of the first on a three-run opposite field homer by senior Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.).
The Coyotes erupted in the second inning, scoring seven runs. Goris added to her impressive performance with an RBI double, followed by a single from Brazill to make it 5-0.
Sophomore Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) came through as a pinch-hitter, driving in two runs with a single to push the lead to 7-0. Senior Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) followed with a two-run double, extending the lead to 9-0.Tosi capped off the rally with an RBI single, making it 10-0 Coyotes.
Chico State responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, trimming the deficit to 10-2.
CSUSB quickly answered in the fourth however, as Lapeña drove in another run with an RBI single to make it 11-2.
With a nine-run lead after five innings, the run rule went into effect, securing the sweep for CSUSB.
Senior
Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) was credited with the win for CSUSB, allowing two runs, both unearned, while striking out four over five innings.
Tosi was the leading Coyote hitter in the final game of the series, going 3-for-3.
Up next, CSUSB will have a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Azusa Pacific. First pitch is slated for noon.
