Softball Opens Series by Splitting with Chico

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHICO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split their doubleheader on Friday afternoon against the Chico State Wildcats.

The Yotes prevailed 10-9 in game one, before falling 2-1 in the second game of the twinbill.

With the split, the Coyotes are 18-18 with a 10-12 record in CCAA play.

Game 1 - CSUSB 10, Chico State 9

In Game 1, CSUSB struck first in the top of the second inning. After Cal State San Bernardino loaded the bases, Jonessa Hebreo (San Diego, Calif.) put the Yotes on the board with an RBI single.

On the next at-bat, Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) hit a single that, combined with an error by Chico State, allowed three runs to score. Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) followed with an RBI single, extending the Coyotes' lead to 5-0.

Chico State responded in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the deficit to 5-2 with the bases loaded. The Wildcats then hit a grand slam to take a 6-5 lead.

CSUSB tied the game at 6-6 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.).

The Coyotes once again loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one out and capitalized on multiple errors by Chico State. Emilie Lapena (Buena Park, Calif.) reached on an error, bringing in a run to make it 8-6. Junior Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) then flew out to right field, but additional errors by the Wildcats allowed two more runs to score, giving CSUSB a 10-6 lead.

Chico State fought back in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases and scoring three runs—two on singles and one on an error—cutting the deficit to 10-9. However, the Wildcats' rally fell short as they popped up to shortstop to end the game, securing the victory for the Coyotes.

Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) delivered a solid performance, being charged with just two runs (one earned run) in the circle and picked up her sixth win of the season.

Game 2 - Chico State 2, CSUSB 1

Game 2 featured less offensive firepower, with all runs coming in the third inning. Hebreo led off with a single and stole second before Galliano drove her in for a 1-0 CSUSB lead.

Chico State responded in the bottom of the third, taking a 2-1 lead on a two-run double.

The Coyotes had limited scoring opportunities and couldn't capitalize late. Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) led off the seventh with a double, but Chico State escaped the inning unscathed to secure the win and split the doubleheader.

In the circle, Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) pitched well, going six innings and allowing just two runs (both earned) in the loss.

Up next, CSUSB will conclude its series against Chico State with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch of game one is set for 11 a.m.
