HAYWARD, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team split their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Baseball Field.
CSUSB prevailed 5-4 in game one, before being blanked 3-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.
With the split, the Coyotes' record stands at 21-8 and 13-6 in CCAA play.
Game 1 - CSUSB 5, Cal State East Bay 4
CSUSB got on the board first in the second inning when Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) led off with a double. A few at-bats later, Ruiz scored on a ground out from senior Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan), giving the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Cal State East Bay tied the game.
The Yotes regained the lead in the top of the fifth. With one out, junior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) hit a two-run homer to put CSUSB ahead, 3-1. They would add another run later in the inning on a Ruiz sacrifice fly, extending their lead to 4-1.
Cal State East Bay responded with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Ruiz hit a go-ahead solo home run which proved to be just enough for the Coyotes to get the win.
On the mound, junior Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.) threw four scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.
Game 2: Cal State East Bay 3, CSUSB 0
In the second game of the doubleheader, Cal State East Bay shut out CSUSB, limiting the Coyotes to a season-low two hits, coming from the bats of Ruiz and Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.).
The Pioneers scored one run in the bottom of the second and added two more in the bottom of the sixth, securing a 3-0 victory.
Sophomore
Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.) took the loss for the Coyotes, allowing just three earned on seven hits over six innings.
Up next, the Coyotes wrap up their series versus Cal State East Bay with a single game tomorrow. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
