HAYWARD, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped a 9-7 decision to the Cal State East Bay Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at the Pioneer Baseball Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes drop to 21-9 overall and 13-7 in CCAA play.
CSUSB struck first, taking a 1-0 lead after junior Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) plated a run with an RBI groundout. The Coyotes extended their lead to 4-0 with three more runs, including a two-run double by graduate student Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.).
In the top of the fifth, CSUSB added three more runs, all from home runs. Ruiz hit a two-run shot, and junior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) followed with a solo blast, pushing the lead to 7-0.
Cal State East Bay responded with a dramatic comeback, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7. They then hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-7 lead.
CSUSB fought back, loading the bases in the top of the eighth and bringing the game-tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth.
Despite earning a no-decision, freshman Jojo Duran (San Bernardino, Calif.) threw five scoreless innings in his longest start of the season.
The Coyotes now head home for a four-game series against Cal State Monterey Bay, beginning Friday with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
