Softball Swept by Sonoma State

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -  The California State University San Bernardino softball team fell in both games of a CCAA doubleheader against the Sonoma State Seawolves on Friday afternoon at the CSUSB Softball Park.

CSUSB fell 8-7 in an extra-inning marathon in game one, before falling short 5-1 in the night cap.

With the defeats, the Coyotes are now 14-16 with a 8-10 record in CCAA play.

Game 1: Sonoma State 8, CSUSB 7

Sonoma State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to a home run and a two-RBI single.

In the bottom of the third, the Coyotes answered back with an RBI single from senior Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.). A few at-bats later, senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) hit a two-run triple down the right field line, tying the game at 3-3.

CSUSB then took a 4-3 lead after an error by the Seawolves and extended the advantage to 5-3 with an RBI single by Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.).

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Sonoma State tied the game with a two-run homer to center field. The Seawolves threatened further, getting additional runners on base, but could not capitalize further. The Coyotes also had two runners in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Sonoma State managed to escape the jam.

The game remained tied until the top of the ninth when Sonoma State hit two home runs—a solo shot followed by a two-run blast—to take an 8-5 lead. CSUSB responded when graduate student Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) delivered a two-RBI double to cut the Seawolves' lead to 8-7. Unfortunately for the Coyotes, Sonoma State made several key defensive plays to hold on for the win.

Olson and Galliano each had three hits, contributing six of the 12 Coyote hits from the top two spots in the lineup. Tosi and Brazill each had two hits as well.

Game 2: Sonoma State 5, CSUSB 1

Sonoma State wasted no time as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning and tacked on one run in the top of the fifth inning.

The Coyote offense was held off the board until the bottom of the seventh, when the hosts mounted a comeback bid starting with an Olson RBI single, but stranded runners on second and third in the defeat.

CSUSB scattered six hits in the defeat, led by Galliano with two from the leadoff position.

Senior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) took the defeat for CSUSB, despite five strikeouts. She allowed only one earned run and four hits in innings two through seven after the shakey start.

Up next, the Coyotes wrap up their series against the Seawolves with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch of game one is slated for 10 a.m.
