HAYWARD, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against the #14 Cal State East Bay Pioneers at the Pioneer Softball Field.
CSUSB lost 2-1 in game one, before salvaging game two with a 5-4 victory over the Pioneers.
With the split, the Coyotes are now 14-14 with a 8-8 record in CCAA play.
Game 1: Cal State East Bay 2, CSUSB 1
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Cal State East Bay scored a run to take a 1-0 lead.
CSUSB tied it up with two outs in the top of the seventh with a single by senior Jonessa Hebreo (San Diego, Calif.), plating junior Alex Hooper (Auburn, Calif.) to tie the game at 1-1.
Unfortunately for the Coyotes, the Pioneers walked it off for the second game in a row on an unearned run for the 2-1 win.
The Yotes scattered six hits in game one, with six players all recording one hit. Freshman
Iliana Mejia (Beaumont, Calif.) had the only extra base hit of the game for the Coyotes, a double in the top of the sixth inning.
Senior
Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) was tagged with the loss, despite allowing no earned runs on five hits over 6+ innings pitched.
Game 2: CSUSB 5, Cal State East Bay 4
CSUSB took a 1-0 lead after a solo home run to lead off the second inning by senior
Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.).
Cal State East Bay would respond by tying it up 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth inning, senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) came up big for the Coyotes, hitting a two-run home run to make it 3-1.
The Pioneers fought back by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
CSUSB would respond in the top of the seventh. Graduate student Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) hit an RBI triple to tie the game 4-4. On the next at-bat, junior Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) reached on an error, scoring Galliano.
While Cal State East Bay was able to get two runners in scoring position with just one out in the bottom of the seventh, CSUSB did not surrender the lead.
Legler bounced back from the loss in game one to be credited with the win in relief, throwing 1.1 innings allowing just two hits and no runs.
Up next, the Coyotes head back home for a four-game series against Sonoma State. First pitch of Game 1 on Friday is set for 1 p.m.
