Softball Splits with Cal State Monterey Bay

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a CCAA doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUSB fell 7-3 in game one, before flipping the script with a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.

With the split, CSUSB moves to 10-10 overall on the season and 4-4 in the CCAA.

Game 1 - Cal State Monterey Bay 7, Cal State San Bernardino 3

The Coyotes plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run homer over the centerfield wall from senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.), but the advantage was short-lived as Cal State Monterey Bay scored four in the bottom of the first.

With her team trailing 5-2 in the fourth, senior Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) drew the Yotes to within two by hitting a solo home run over the fence in right center, but that would be as close as the visitors would get. Monterey Bay scored twice in the sixth for insurance, giving the game its final score of 7-3.

Senior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) took the loss despite a solid outing in the circle. She allowed three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in the loss.

Goris was the team's leader offensively in the defeat, recording two of the five CSUSB hits.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 7, Cal State Monterey Bay 3

Cal State Monterey Bay scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead, but it was the Coyotes who responded with seven unanswered runs to salvage the split.

Tosi tied the game in the top of the third with a three-run home run to center, her second homer of the day.

Two innings later, junior Madison Zaro (Chino, Calif.) put the Yotes on top for good with an RBI double down the line in left, and sophomore Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) extended the lead to two with an RBI single.

In the sixth, CSUSB got some insurance with a two-run double from Goris, giving the game its final score of 7-3.

Senior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) got the win with a solid outing in the circle. She allowed three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in the victory.

Tosi had a huge game at the dish for CSUSB, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, as well as the home run.

The Coyotes will return to action hosting Stanislaus State for a four-game series at the CSUSB Softball Park starting on Friday.
