SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team defeated Regis University on Sunday morning 8-2 at Fiscalini Field.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 5-2 on the season.
Regis struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring one run. However, CSUSB quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, tying the game on a Daryl Ruiz (Fontana, Calif.) RBI double.
The Rangers regained the lead in the top of the third, which held until the bottom of the fifth, when CSUSB took a 3-2 lead after a two-out, two-run double by senior Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.). The Coyotes extended their lead further in the bottom of the sixth, adding three more runs to make it 6-2. Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) and Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.) had RBI singles in the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot that gave the Yotes a 7-2 lead. Senior Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) then tripled down the right field line and was driven in by Vanneste on the next at-bat, extending the lead to 8-2.
The Yotes' pitching was stellar throughout the game. Junior Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.) earned the start, and freshman Jojo Duran (San Bernardino, Calif.) earned his first career win, allowing no hits, one walk, and striking out four in three innings of work while not allowing a run. Senior Colby Scheuber (Aberdeen, Wash.) would finish the game with two shutout innings while allowing no hits and walking just one batter.
Up next, CSUSB will host Central Washington for a three-game series next weekend. The first game is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Friday.
