Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. Regis

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Regis University Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.

The Yotes won a marathon 26-16 decision in game one, before prevailing 11-6 in game two.

With the sweep, CSUSB improves to 4-2 overall on the young season.

Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 26, Regis 16

Cal State San Bernardino used a massive 11-run first inning to take early control in the first game of the day.

Graduate student Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) opened the scoring with a bases-clearing double to the gap in left-center, putting the Yotes on top 2-0. Three batters later, senior Adrian Hinojosa Jr. (Chula Vista, Calif.) drove in two more for CSUSB on a base hit through the left side, stretching the lead to five.

Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) and Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) each notched bases loaded walks in the inning for an RBI, while Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) recorded an RBI fielder's choice to extend the lead to nine. Junior Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.) capped the inning with a two-run double down the line in left to give the Yotes an 11-run lead.

The Coyotes saw the lead slip away after the Rangers posted one run in the second, three in the third, and seven in the fourth, but responded with three in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the lead. Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) gave the Yotes the advantage on a two-run double, followed by an RBI single by Vanneste.

San Bernardino extended their lead to seven at 18-11 with a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth. Hall drove in the inning's first run on a single up the middle, before CSUSB scored on a wild pitch. Luna wrapped up the inning with a two-run single through the left side.

Regis made things interesting by scoring five times in the top of the seventh to draw to within two at 18-16, but the Coyote responded with six in the bottom of the frame to all but ice the victory. Vanneste and Mejia had RBI singles in the inning, before Luna capped the frame with a two-run shot over the wall in left.

The Yotes added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a pinch hit double from freshman Keedan Nadeau (Highland, Calif.) in his first collegiate at-bat, giving the game its final score of 26-16.

A handful of Coyotes had impressive stat lines in the first game of the twinbill, led by Luna, who went 4-for-5 with six RBIs, three runs scored, a double, and a home run. Vanneste went 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBIs, while Mejia went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

The win was officially credited to junior Jesse Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.), who threw 2.1 shutout innings in relief, striking out three batters.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 11, Regis 6

Cal State San Bernardino got off to another strong start in game two, as Ruiz belted a three-run shot for his first home run of the season, putting the Yotes ahead 3-0 after one.

After Regis got one back in the top of the second, Hall delivered a two-run base hit up the middle in the bottom of the frame to put the Yotes in front 5-1.

The lead was short-lived for the Coyotes, as the Rangers posted four runs in the top of the third to level the score at 5-5.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Yotes took the lead for good, thanks to a two-run homer over the right-centerfield wall from Hall. CSUSB added insurance in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double from Ruiz, and an inning later added two more on another two-run double, this time from junior Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.) to extend the Coyote lead to 11-5.

The Rangers tacked on one run in the top of the seventh, but the comeback bid fell far short as the Yotes wrapped up the sweep.

Ruiz was the leading Coyote hitter in the night cap, going 3-for-4 with five runs batted in. Shedlock also posted three hits and scored three times, while Hall went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Senior Dylan O'Connor (Tacoma, Wash.) got the win on the hill, going five strong innings with five strikeouts.

Next up for the Coyotes, they will wrap up play at the Concordia Kickoff Classic on Sunday morning when they take on reigning national runner-up #2 Western Washington. First pitch is slated for 8:30 a.m.
