#20 Baseball Splits with Stan State

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #20 California State University San Bernardino baseball team split a CCAA doubleheader against Stanislaus State Saturday afternoon at the Warrior Baseball Stadium.

The Yotes won 7-2 in game one, before falling 5-4 on a walk-off in game two.

With the split, CSUSB moves to 9-4 overall on the season, and 1-2 in the CCAA.

Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 7, Stanislaus State 2

The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning, when the Yotes took a 1-0 lead thanks to a Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) RBI double, plating junior Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.).

Stan State tied the game on a double play in the bottom of the third, but a two-run homer from graduate student Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) put the visitors back on top for good at 3-1.

Despite a Stanislaus run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2, the Yotes exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth to put the contest out of reach. Ruiz's three-run home run put the game away for CSUSB, as the grad student tied for the career home runs lead with his 27th long ball in a Coyote uniform.

Ruiz was the offensively leader for the Yotes, going 3-for-4 with five runs batted in and two runs scored. Senior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) was the only other Coyote with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Sophomore Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.) got the win for the Yotes throwing six strong innings, allowing two earned on seven hits with six strikeouts. Junior Conner Batzer (Ridgecrest, Calif.) was stellar out of the bullpen, throwing three shutout innings while allowing only two hits and no walks to earn the save.

Game 2 - Stanislaus State 5, Cal State San Bernardino 4

Cal State San Bernardino scored their first run of the game before Stanislaus even came to the plate, as Shedlock scored on a Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) reach on error, putting the Yotes ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.

Stanislaus State scored twice in the third and once in the fourth to go ahead 3-1, but the Coyotes refused to go down quietly. The Yotes cut the deficit to one on a Shedlock groundout in the top of the fifth, before taking the lead when junior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) belted a two-run homer over the centerfield wall in the top of the sixth.

Stan State tied the score in the bottom of the frame, and walked it off in the bottom of the seventh to complete the come-from-behind win.

Shedlock was the only Yote to record multiple hits in the defeat, going 2-for-4 with a run scored for the second game in a row.

The Coyotes and Warriors will conclude their series at Stanislaus State on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
