SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team swept their doubleheader against No. 18 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon at CSUSB Softball Park.
With the sweep, the Coyotes improve to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in CCAA play.
Game 1: Cal State San Bernardino 4, Cal State Dominguez Hills 2
The Toros took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and held onto it until the bottom of the third inning. CSUSB tied the game in the third, starting with junior Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.), followed by a single up the middle from senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) to load the bases.
Senior Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) then tied the game with a bases-loaded single, and the Coyotes took a 2-1 lead after a wild pitch from the Toros.
The Yotes would score two more runs in the bottom of the fourth off of back-to-back singles by Escujuri and junior Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.), respectively. For the game, Escujuri and senior Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) each recorded three hits for CSUSB.
Cal State Dominguez Hills added a run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as CSUSB held on for the win.
In the circle, senior Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) threw a complete game to earn her second win of the season. She allowed just two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts in the victory.
Game 2: Cal State San Bernardino 4, Cal State Dominguez Hills 1
The score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the second inning. With one out, senior Lindsey Marschall (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) doubled to left center. On the next at-bat, senior Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) would drive her home to give the Yotes the 1-0 lead.
The Toros responded with a run to tie the game in the top of the fourth, but CSUSB quickly regained the lead. With a runner on and one out in the bottom of the fourth, junior Madison Zaro (Chino, Calif.) hit a double to put the Coyotes ahead 2-1.
Zaro also delivered some key insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, when she hit a bases-loaded double to right center, extending the lead to 4-1.
Senior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) needed just 74 pitches in her first complete game of the season, issuing zero walks. She allowed one earned run on six hits with three Ks.
Up next, CSUSB will conclude their series against Cal State Dominguez Hills with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
