TURLOCK, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team fell to Simon Fraser University Friday afternoon in their first contest at the Tournament of Champions at Pedretti Park.
With the defeat, CSUSB falls to 4-4 overall on the season.
The Coyotes struck first in the top of the second, when senior
Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) roped a double to left field, scoring junior
Madison Zaro (Chino, Calif.) all the way from first base.
The Red Leafs struck for four in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead.
CSUSB chipped away at the lead in the top of the fifth when seniors
Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) and
Lindsey Marschall (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) each recorded RBI singles, but Simon Fraser immediately recorded a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to jump ahead 6-3.Â
The Yotes made a comeback bid in the top of the seventh, plating a run on a
Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) RBI single, but that would be as close as the Yotes would get.
Senior
Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) took the loss for the Yotes in the circle, despite striking out five batters over 4.1 innings pitched.
Tosi had a big day at the plate for the Yotes, going 4-for-4 with a double, RBI, and run scored in the defeat, while Escujuri, Olson, and freshman
Iliana Mejia (Beaumont, Calif.) each recorded two hits.
The Coyotes will continue play at the Tournament of Champions on Saturday with contests against Jessup and Academy of Art.
