Women's Basketball Bests Cal State San Marcos

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team defeated Cal State San Marcos 71-61 Thursday evening in CCAA action at Coussoulis Arena.

With the win, CSUSB improves to 11-11 overall on the season and 10-7 in CCAA play. The Yotes have now won eight of their last nine games.

The Coyotes rushed out to an early 12-2 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest thanks to an 8-0 run, but San Marcos responded by finishing the first quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to three at 12-9. Graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the Coyotes with four first quarter points.

CSUSB began to pull away in the second quarter, outpacing the Cougars 19-13 to carry a 31-22 lead into the locker room. Jackson scored a team-high six points in the quarter, hitting 1,000 career points on a made free throw late in the half.

The third quarter was the highest-scoring period of the night, as the Coyotes narrowly outscored San Marcos by a margin of 22-21. CSUSB shot 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from the field in the third, and was paced by graduate student Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.) and senior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.), with eight and six points respectively.

Cal State San Bernardino closed out the win in the fourth quarter by holding the Cougars to 35 percent (7-for-20) field goal shooting. Each team scored 18 points, including nine from the Yotes off free throws, as CSUSB secured the win.

Jackson led CSUSB with a 18-point, nine-rebound, six-assist performance in the victory. Morris posted 14 points and nine boards of her own, while senior Deannah Buckner (Rialto, Calif.) posted 10 points against her former team.

Next up for the Yotes, they will host Sonoma State on Saturday at Coussoulis Arena. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
