SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team defeated the Sonoma State Seawolves 74-62 Saturday afternoon in CCAA action at Coussoulis Arena.
With the victory, the Coyotes improved to 12-11 overall and 11-7 in CCAA play.
CSUSB started the game strong with a 9-2 run, led by graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.). However, Sonoma State quickly responded with an 8-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. At the end of the first quarter, Sonoma State held a 20-17 lead.
The Coyotes came out firing in the second quarter. After falling behind 24-19 early on, senior Deannah Buckner (Rialto, Calif.) drained a three-pointer to spark a 23-8 run, putting CSUSB ahead. Graduate student Paisley Specht (Sacramento, Calif.) also hit a three-pointer, giving the Coyotes the lead for good. Specht finished with a season-high nine points, including three three-pointers.
Senior Rae McCrae (Sacramento, Calif.) also played a pivotal role, contributing a season-high 12 points, with eight of those coming in the first half. The Coyotes received substantial support from their bench, which accounted for 36 of their 74 points. Seven different Yotes scored at least seven points. A late three-pointer by Buckner gave CSUSB a 42-32 lead at halftime.
The Coyotes came out strong in the third quarter, with senior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) scoring a layup to start the period. Shortly after, sophomore Citlali Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) made a layup to extend the lead to 46-36. CSUSB reached their largest lead of the quarter when graduate student Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.) knocked down a three-pointer near the end, giving the Coyotes a 59-44 advantage. Morris finished the game with the lone double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The Coyotes led 61-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
CSUSB continued to dominate in the final period, grabbing their largest lead of the afternoon at 76-54 after a layup by Salazar. Sonoma State closed the gap with an 8-0 run, but it was not enough, and the Coyotes held on for the 76-62 victory.
Up next, the Coyotes host Cal State East Bay on Thursday. Tip-off at Coussoulis Arena is slated for 5:30 p.m.
