Softball Garners Split at CUI

IRVINE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles on Tuesday afternoon at Golden Eagles Stadium.

With the split, the Coyotes' record now stands at 4-3.

Game 1: Concordia 6, CSUSB 1

Concordia struck first, scoring one in the bottom of the first inning. They would hold that lead until the bottom of the fourth, when they scored a couple of more runs.

CSUSB responded with a solo home run from senior Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) in the top of the sixth—her first home run of the season and the team's first of the year. However, Concordia answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 6-1 win.

Despite the loss, senior pitcher Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) recorded nine strikeouts, the most by a CSUSB pitcher this season.

Goris led the way offensively, recording two of the five Coyote hits.

Game 2: CSUSB 4, Concordia 3

CSUSB started the second game strong with a leadoff single by senior Emilie Lapena (Buena Park, Calif.). Goris drove her in moments later on an RBI groundout to second base.

In the top of the second, senior Lindsey Marschall (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) doubled and later scored on an RBI single by junior Madison Zaro (Chino, Calif.) to stretch the CSUSB lead to two.

The Coyotes added one run in both the third and fifth innings. Senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot in the top of the fifth to give the Yotes a 4-1 lead.

Concordia made a late push in the bottom of the fifth, but senior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) came in as relief for junior Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) and preserved the Yotes' 4-3 lead after five innings.

Vargas pitched 2.2 scoreless innings until Concordia got two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Blackmon  entered to record the final out and earn the save. Legler got the win, striking out three batters and allowing only one walk over four innings.

Tosi and Zaro each had a pair of hits for CSUSB, while Tosi notched two runs batted in.

Next, the Coyotes will travel to Turlock for the Tournament of Champions Classic. They will face Dominican University of California and Simon Fraser on Friday to start the tourney.
