SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team defeated Cal Poly Humboldt 57-43 on Saturday afternoon in CCAA play at Coussoulis Arena.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 9-10 overall and 8-6 in CCAA play. The victory is their sixth in a row.
CSUSB started strong with early baskets from senior Deannah Buckner (Rialto, Calif.) and senior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) to take a 4-0 lead. However, the team went cold for the rest of the quarter, and Humboldt held an 11-7 lead after the first period.
Humboldt continued to lead early in the second quarter, but the Coyotes fought back. Sophomore Citlali Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit a jumper to bring CSUSB within one at 14-13, and senior Rae McCrae (Sacramento, Calif.) tied the game with a layup.
Graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) gave the Coyotes the lead after a steal that led to a pair of free throws. She finished with 12 points, including eight from four first-half steals. CSUSB extended its lead to as many as eight points in the first half, capped by a jumper from senior Isabel Arango (Gardena, Calif.). The Coyotes also played their best defensive quarter in the second, holding Humboldt to just eight points.
The Coyotes carried their momentum into the third quarter, shooting 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) from the field for their best-shooting performance of the game. A 6-0 run, fueled by Jackson, graduate student Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.), and Dufresne, gave CSUSB a 41-33 lead heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the Coyotes maintained their lead for a 57-43 victory. Graduate student Tarryn Ross (Garden Grove, Calif.) led the team with 13 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter. She also added eight rebounds and four assists.
CSUSB held Humboldt to just 24.1 percent shooting, the second-lowest mark allowed by the Coyotes this season.
Next up, CSUSB travels to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday. Tip-off in Carson is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
