CARSON, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday evening at the Torodome by a final score of 70-54.
With the loss, the Coyotes are now 9-11 overall and 8-7 in CCAA play.
CSUSB took an early 3-0 lead following a three-pointer by graduate student Paisley Specht (Sacramento, Calif.). However, Dominguez Hills responded with a 10-0 run to go up 10-3. The Coyotes countered, first with a jumper by graduate student Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.), followed by a bucket from senior Isabel Arango (Gardena, Calif.) as part of a 13-4 run to end the quarter with a 16-14 lead after sophomore Citlali Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit a pair of free throws. The defense was strong for the Yotes in the first quarter, as they forced eight turnovers in the first ten minutes.
In the second quarter, the Coyotes briefly held the lead with baskets from senior Deannah Buckner (Rialto, Calif.) and graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.), but Dominguez Hills' defense took control. Despite struggling offensively, CSUSB trailed by just seven at halftime.
The Coyotes responded in the third quarter, overcoming a slow start. After falling behind 44-34 with 2:57 left in the period, CSUSB went on an 8-0 run to close the gap to 44-42. Dominguez Hills led 48-43 entering the fourth quarter. This was the Yotes' best shooting quarter, as they shot 8-for-15 (53.3 percent).
Though the Coyotes had early chances in the final period, the Toros pulled away to secure the win. Despite coming up short, CSUSB forced 23 turnovers, tying for the second-most forced by the team this season.
Up next, the Coyotes travel to Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday. Tip-off at University Gym is slated for 1 p.m.
