SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's soccer team saw its bid for a CCAA title come to an end on Sunday afternoon, as the Coyotes fell to Cal State San Marcos on penalties in the First Round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament at Premier Field.
The game officially goes into the book as a tie, and the result sees the Yotes move to 9-3-7 overall on the season.
The Coyotes opened the scoring in just the seventh minute, when redshirt junior Julian Vazquez (Los Angeles, Calif.) slotted home his fourth goal of the season. Vazquez took a feed from senior captain Tony Negrete (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.) and slid it into the bottom left corner of the net for a 1-0 CSUSB advantage.
In the 65th minute, the Coyotes extended the lead to a pair on a goal from Anthony Morales (Orange, Calif.). For the second time on the day, Negrete was credited with an assist on the goal.Â
San Marcos cut the lead to one on a goal in the 69th minute, and equalized in the 81st minute to force overtime.
Neither team found the back of the net in either 10-minute golden goal session, and the game went to penalties. In PKs, the Cougars advanced by a margin of 4-3 to end the tournament run for the Yotes.
CSUSB is still very much alive for NCAA Tournament contention. They will find out their fate at the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, November 17 at 4 p.m.
