SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball fell to Westmont University 62-46 in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon at Coussoulis Arena.
With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 2-3 overall on the season.
Westmont came out of the gate hot, scoring 26 first quarter points to take a 26-11 advantage after one. Junior Citlali Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted three points and three assists in the quarter to lead the Coyotes, factoring in all four made baskets for the hosts.
CSUSB's offensive struggles continued in the second quarter, as the Yotes hit just three of their 16 field goal attempts (18.8 percent) and scored only eight points. They were sharp on the defensive end of the floor however, holding the Warriors to 1-of-10 (10 percent) shooting while forcing four turnovers.
Westmont pulled away in the third quarter by outpacing Cal State San Bernardino 17-7 to head to the fourth up 26.
The fourth quarter was CSUSB's best of the evening, as the Yotes outscored Westmont 20-10. Sophomore Princess Cassell (Eastvale, Calif.) led the Coyotes with eight points, while freshman Arianna Hallstrom (San Leandro, Calif.) provided a spark off the bench, scoring four points with two boards and an assist in just under four minutes. Â
Cassell finished as the leading Coyote scorer with 14 points in the defeat, with 11 coming in the second half. Junior Sincere Hardwick (San Bernardino, Calif.) was a force at the defensive end of the floor, notching a team-high 10 boards while also blocking a shot.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will begin conference play on Thursday evening at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
