SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's soccer has punched its ticket to the CCAA Tournament by defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 in CCAA action Sunday afternoon at Premier Field.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 8-5-4 overall and 6-2-2 in the CCAA. The CCAA Tournament berth is the first for CSUSB women's soccer since 2016.
Before the game, seven Cal State San Bernardino seniors were honored as they played in their penultimate regular season home game at Premier Field. Bella Cervantes (Anaheim, Calif.), Angela Morales (Montclair, Calif.), Mitzali Macias (Eastvale, Calif.), Emilee Perez (Corona, Calif.), Gianna Senices (Corona, Calif.), Leslie Aldape (Ontario, Calif.), and Rebeca Cruz (Ontario, Calif.) were joined on the field by their friends and family for the pregame ceremony.
Once the game got underway, the Toros struck first on a marker in the 38th minute, but their lead lasted less than three minutes, as Coyote sophomore Alyssa Vernon (Hesperia, Calif.) leveled the score with her second goal of the season. Vernon took a feed from classmate Reagan Parkhill (San Dimas, Calif.) and chipped the Toro keeper to tie the score at 1-1 heading to halftime. A secondary assist was credited to sophomore Angelyn Pena (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Pena broke the deadlock in the 70th minute off a rebound to put the Yotes ahead for good. After Aldape's shot hit the post, Pena jumped on the loose ball and calmly slid it into the vacated cage for a 2-1 Coyote advantage.
In goal, the win went to Anai Olmedo (Wildomar, Calif.), who came in in relief and played 32 minutes to earn her first NCAA win. She made six saves without conceding a goal.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will play for a bye into the CCAA Semifinals when they play Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday in the regular season finale at Premier Field. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
