SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 3-0 Friday evening in a CCAA contest on Kim Cherniss Court at Coussoulis Arena. Set scores were 25-17, 25-20, and 25-14.
With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 19-5 overall on the season and 14-3 in the CCAA.
Before the match, five Cal State San Bernardino seniors were honored as they played in their penultimate regular season home game at Coussoulis Arena. Jordan Cherniss (Colton, Calif.), Charli Blackman (Auckland, New Zealand), Savannah Hoffmann (Rialto, Calif.), Abbey Clarke (Oswego, Ill.), and Jayden Chornomud (Canyon Lake, Calif.) were joined on the court by their friends and family for the pregame ceremony.
Cal State Monterey Bay stuck around in the early stages of set one, a set that featured 10 ties and two lead changes. The Coyotes, however, put the set to bed with a 7-0 run, turning an 18-17 lead into a 25-17 set victory. Junior Kacie Pedersen (Riverside, Calif.) led the Coyotes with five kills, while classmate M'Kera Drake (San Bernardino, Calif.) posted four of her own.
The Yotes left much less doubt in set two, as the set featured only one tie and one lead change. Pedersen stayed hot with six more kills as well as a pair of service aces, while setter McKenna Edwards (Santa Clarita, Calif.) had a pair of assisted blocks.
Set three was close until about midway though the set, when the Coyotes clinched the match with an 11-2 run to go from a 12-9 advantage to a 23-11 advantage, thanks in part to three kills from Pedersen. Moments later, Hoffmann capped her Senior Night with a match-securing kill to end the contest.
Pedersen led all players with 16 kills, while also posting five digs, three service aces, and a solo block. Hoffmann and Edwards each had five kills without an error, while Chornomud had a match-high 15 digs.
The Coyotes will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Cal State Los Angeles to conclude the regular season at 5 p.m. The winner will secure a bye in the first round of next weekend's CCAA Tournament, while the other will be the three seed. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
