SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team defeated Cal State Los Angeles in five sets Saturday evening in the regular season finale on Kim Cherniss Court at Coussoulis Arena. Set scores were 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-11, and 15-11.
With the victory, the Coyotes finish the regular season at 20-5 overall and 15-3 in the CCAA. The win also lifts the Yotes to a bye into the semifinals of next weekend's CCAA Tournament.
The Coyotes took off slow out of the gate, with five attack errors and only eight kills in set one to fall behind 1-0. Redshirt senior Savannah Hoffmann (Rialto, Calif.) accounted for half of CSUSB's offense in the set, posting four kills, as well as matching the team high with three digs.
CSUSB got back in the match with a strong set two showing, hitting .250 to level the score. Setter McKenna Edwards (Santa Clarita, Calif.) spread out the Coyote attack, as four different players had multiple kills in the set, paced by four each from Kacie Pedersen (Riverside, Calif.) and Kisa Sagiao (San Diego, Calif.).
The Yotes hit .278 in set three, but ran into Cal State LA's top hitting performance of the evening at .317, as the Golden Eagles took their second lead of the night. As in set two, Pedersen and Sagiao each led the Coyotes with four kills.
Cal State San Bernardino dominated set four to take firm control of the match. It was the only set of the evening to feature no ties nor lead changes, as the Yotes sprinted out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back. CSUSB hit at a clip of .351, with 15 kills to just two errors, while LA struggled to a mark of -.103.
For the second set in a row, a strong start was the difference for the Coyotes, as the hosts jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set five, giving them a firm cushion for the remainder of the race to 15. The Golden Eagles got to within three on a handful of occasions, but never any closer, as the Coyotes were able to close out the win.Â
Next, the Coyotes will open up CCAA Tournament play in the conference semifinals on Friday at 3 p.m. They will play the winner of the first round matchup between the third-seeded Cal State Los Angeles and sixth-seeded Cal State East Bay.
