SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's soccer team knocked off Cal State San Marcos 3-0 in CCAA play Sunday afternoon at Premier Field.
With the win, the Coyotes move to 8-2-5 overall on the season and 3-1-3 in CCAA play.
Before the game, four Cal State San Bernardino seniors were honored as they played in their penultimate regular season home game at Premier Field. Reece Kilpin (Sydney, Australia), Anthony Morales (Orange, Calif.), Tony Negrete (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.), and Juanpablo Camacho (Norwalk, Calif.) were joined on the field by their friends and family for the pregame ceremony.
Once play got underway, the Coyotes wasted little time getting on the board first. In just the fifth minute, sophomore Rafa Fonseca (Fontana, Calif.) fed a ball back to junior Jahir Gonzalez-Sandoval (Westminster, Calif.), whose right-footed rocket from just outside the top of the box deflected off a Cougar defender and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Cal State San Bernardino lead.
Despite the Cougars outshooting the Coyotes 10-3 in the half, the goal stood up as the only one in the first 45, and the Yotes took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Coyotes were awarded a penalty kick just over nine minutes into the second half, and Negrete made no mistake on his opportunity, burying a shot into the left side of the net after sending the keeper to the right to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
CSUSB put the final nail in the coffin in the 80th minute. In transition, redshirt junior Luis Marin (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a great look from the left wing that was stopped by the Cougar goalkeeper, but the rebound bounced right to the foot of redshirt sophomore Alix Soukup (Canoga Park, Calif.), who deposited his second goal of the season to ice the contest.
In goal, Donovan Palomares (Boyle Heights, Calif.) earned the clean sheet with three saves, including a dazzling diving stop on a free kick in the 83rd minute that helped preserve the shutout.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will start a massive weekend against the CCAA's Los Angeles representatives, first with Cal State LA on Friday. Kickoff from University Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
