Women's Volleyball Falls to Cal Poly Pomona in Five-Set Marathon

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team suffered a five-set defeat to Cal Poly Pomona Thursday evening in a CCAA contest on Kim Cherniss Court at Coussoulis Arena. Set scores were 30-28, 25-23, 22-25, 18-25, and 15-10.

With the defeat, Cal State San Bernardino falls to 8-4 overall on the season and 3-2 in CCAA play.

The Coyotes had three set points in a lengthy set number one, but ultimately it was the Broncos who prevailed. Seven different Coyotes had kills in the set, paced by junior Kacie Pedersen (Riverside, Calif.), who wracked up nine with only one error in the set.

The CSUSB offense went quiet in set two, as the team combined for just seven kills to Cal Poly Pomona's 17 as the Broncos took a commanding 2-0 advantage.

CSUSB wouldn't go down quietly however, cutting the deficit to 2-1 by taking set three 25-22. The set featured 11 ties and six lead changes, and saw sophomore Kisa Sagiao (San Diego, Calif.) chip in three kills and three blocks to get the Yotes on the board.

The Coyotes went wire-to-wire in set four, leading by as many as 10 at 19-9 on their way to forcing a decisive set five. San Bernardino swung .333 for the set, led again by nine kills from Pedersen.

The fifth set went back and forth in the beginning, and was tied at every score from 0-0 to 7-7 before the Broncos pulled away. After trailing 7-6, Pomona scored nine of the match's last 12 points to stave off the reverse sweep.

Pedersen had a huge night for the Yotes, posting a career-high 29 kills in the defeat. She also had 11 digs for the double-double. Sagiao was the only other Coyote in double figures in kills with 10, while also matching M'Kera Drake (San Bernardino, Calif.) for the team lead with six blocks.

Next up for the Coyotes, they will return to action with a contest against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. First serve from Kim Cherniss Court is slated for 7 p.m.
