SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team earned a Homecoming victory over Cal State San Marcos Saturday evening in CCAA action at Kim Cherniss Court at Coussoulis Arena. Set scores were 25-12, 25-11, and 25-18.
With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in the CCAA.
The Yotes scored the first six points of set one and never looked back to take early command of the match. CSUSB used a balanced attack in the first, with nobody recording more than two kills, but rather it was six service aces from senior Abbey Clarke (Oswego, Ill.) that pushed the Coyotes over the top.
CSUSB opened the second set on a 12-0 run to take firm command, and were able to cruise to the 2-0 lead. The Coyotes hit .290 in the set, while the Cougars had four kills and eight errors for a -.143 attack percentage. Coyote sophomore Kisa Sagiao (San Diego, Calif.) led all players with five kills in the set, without an error, while redshirt freshman Sarai Ross (Beaumont, Calif.) had three kills.
The third set was the tightest of the three sets on the evening, but nine kills from senior Kacie Pedersen (Riverside, Calif.) helped propel the Yotes to the win. Thanks to Pedersen's strong showing and 14 assists from sophomore McKenna Edwards (Santa Clarita, Calif.), the Yotes swung .429 in the set.
Pedersen finished as the game's leader in kills with 11 after her nine-kill third set showing. The only other player in double figures on the evening was Sagiao with 10. Clarke added another service ace in set two to finish with tied with a CSUSB single-match record with seven, while Edwards had 29 assists, six digs, and four blocks.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will play a vital CCAA contest on Thursday evening at their rivals from Cal Poly Pomona. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
