CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's soccer team opened its 2024 season with a 3-3 draw against Point Loma Nazarene University Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center.
With the draw, Cal State San Bernardino opens its season with an overall record of 0-0-1.
The Coyotes trailed on three different occasions during the contest, but rallied to equalize all three times.
Point Loma opened the scoring in the 11th minute on a marker by Zach Mercieca, but their 1-0 advantage lasted less than four minutes. Senior Martin Garcia (Santa Ana, Calif.) notched CSUSB's first goal of the season in the 15th minute when he connected on a feed from classmate Sebastian Bibian (La Puente, Calif.) to knot the score at 1-1.
In the 22nd minute, the Sea Lions pulled back ahead by one on a Felix Calero tally, but their lead lasted less than three minutes. In the 24th minute, senior Brian Castillo (North Hollywood, Calif.) re-leveled the match with his first goal of the day off an assist from Garcia.
Point Loma took a 3-2 lead into halftime on a 29th minute PK from Calero.
The only tally of the second half came on a penalty kick from Castillo in the 54th minute, his second goal of the afternoon, giving the contest its final score of 3-3.
Senior Aiden Hanes (Riverside, Calif.) earned the draw in net for the Coyotes with a two-save effort.
CSUSB held the edge in shots in the match, outpacing Point Loma 14-8 overall and 8-2 in the second half. The Yotes also held a 4-2 edge in corners.
Next up for CSUSB, they will play their home opener at Premier Field on Saturday afternoon against Biola. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
