SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The CSUSB women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 decision against the Westmont Warriors of the PacWest conference Thursday afternoon at Torrington Field in Santa Barbara.
With the win, the Coyotes move to 1-1-3 on the season, and are undefeated in their last four matches.
Forward Emma Frausto (Ontario, Calif.) gave CSUSB their first lead of the season with a penalty kick goal in the 33rd minute. Frausto leads the team with eight shots on the year, including three on goal. Westmont would respond with a goal of their own in the 52nd minute.
The Coyotes would not give up. In the 84th minute, Forward Bella Cervantes (Anaheim, Calif.) gave CSUSB a 2-1 that they would not relinquish. Westmont responded almost immediately with a penalty kick opportunity, also in the 84th minute, but Goalkeeper Leila Peregrina (Chino, Calif.) came up with two key consecutive saves to preserve the lead.
Peregrina ended the match with five saves, the fourth time this season she has recorded at least five saves. She now also leads the CCAA with 5.2 saves per game. Despite coming up short, Westmont outshot CSUSB 12-8 including 6-5 on shots on goal.
The Coyotes will be at home this Saturday against
No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona. While Cal Poly Pomona is a CCAA opponent, this will count as a non-conference game, as the first game between travel partners is such per CCAA rules. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
