SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #21 California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team defeated Cal State East Bay 3-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Thursday evening at Coussoulis Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 25-16, and 25-18.
With the victory, CSUSB improves to 6-4 overall on the season and 2-1 in CCAA action.
The teams played a tight set number one, which featured 12 ties and four lead changes. East Bay led by as many as four points midway through the set at 13-9, but the Coyotes rebounded to take control of the set. After trailing 20-19, CSUSB went on a 6-1 run to secure the set and take the early 1-0 lead.
Senior Ashley Robinson (Tucson, Ariz.) had a strong start in the first set, recording a match-high seven kills, coming on just 11 attacks. Libero Abbey Clark (Oswego, Ill.) posted six digs.
The second was all Coyotes from early on. The Yotes ran out to an early 11-6 lead, and never looked back on their way to a 25-16 set win. Senior Savannah Hoffmann (Rialto, Calif.) notched six kills without an error in the set to lead the way for CSUSB, pushing Cal State East Bay to the brink.
Robinson and Hoffmann each posted six third-set kills to help CSUSB cruise to the sweep.Â
Cal State San Bernardino's .304 attack percentage in set number three was their lowest of the evening. The Yotes hit .366 in set one and .389 in the second for a match attack percentage of .350, their best mark of the season.
Robinson finished as CSUSB's leader with 15 kills and just two errors. Close behind was Hoffmann with 13 kills and one error. Clark led all players with 13 digs, followed closely by junior outside hitter Jordan Cherniss (Colton, Calif.).
Next up for the Coyotes, they will host CCAA foe Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday evening at Coussoulis Arena. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
