POMONA, Calif. - The #19 California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of #13 Cal Poly Pomona in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener Friday evening at Kellogg Arena. Set scores were 24-26, 25-12, 25-16, 25-18.
With the defeat, CSUSB falls to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.
CSUSB made a massive comeback in set one to take the early edge on the evening. Trailing 19-11 nearing the end of the set, the Yotes went on a 12-3 run to take a 23-22 lead, and won the set moments later after back-to-back
Ashley Robinson (Tucson, Ariz.) kills. Robinson had an astounding 10 kills in the set, as the Coyotes hit .333 with 19 kills on just 42 attempts.
CSUSB's offense was quieted in the second as the Broncos held the visitors to just 12 points. CSUSB had eight kills with four errors, paced by two kills each from Robinson,
Allison Legates (Los Altos, Calif.), and
Savannah Hoffmann (Rialto, Calif.).
In the third, the hosts took their first lead of the night with a convincing 25-16 edge. Robinson mustered three kills to lead the Coyotes, but the rest of the team combined for just six kills as the Broncos took the advantage.
Cal Poly Pomona closed out the match with a 25-18 score line in the fourth and final set. The Yotes hit just .062, with eight kills and six errors.
Robinson led the way for the Coyotes with 17 kills in the defeat. She also posted 12 digs for the double-double. Hoffman was CSUSB's second-leading hitter with eight kills, while junior
Jordan Cherniss (Colton, Calif.) led the way offensively with 16 digs.
Next up for CSUSB, the Yotes will return to action on Saturday evening with a trip south to Cal State San Marcos. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
