AZUSA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's soccer team took down Azusa Pacific University 3-1 in non-conference action Friday evening at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
With the win, CSUSBÂ improves to 2-1-2 on the young season.
Sophomore
Rafa Fonseca (Fontana, Calif.) opened the scoring for the Coyotes in the 17th minute.
Junior
Jaret Rocha (Paramount, Calif.) played a long ball over the top that found the foot of Fonseca. Fonseca took a touch and fired a shot that deflected in off the keeper to put the visitors on top by a goal.
Just 51 seconds later, Fonseca's second goal of the day gave CSUSB a two-goal edge. Fonseca got on the end of a cross from the right from junior
AJ Valdivia (Perris, Calif.) and batted it past the APU keeper for a two-goal edge in just the 18th minute.
Azusa Pacific scored in the 20th minute to cut the deficit down to 2-1, a score that would hold until the halftime break.
A 55th minute insurance marker from senior
Brian Castillo (North Hollywood, Calif.) proved to be the only goal of the second half, as CSUSB was able to sail away with the two-goal victory.
Between the pipes, senior
Aiden Hanes (Riverside, Calif.) got the win for the Coyotes with a three-save effort.
The Yotes held a healthy 16-4 edge in shots in the victory, landing 10 shots on goal to APU's four.
Next up, CSUSB will play a non-conference contest against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, September 28 at home. Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m.
