SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team knocked off Cal Poly Pomona 5-3 in the opener of their regular season-ending four-game series Thursday afternoon in CCAA action at Fiscalini Field.
With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 21-24 overall and 14-21 in the CCAA.
CSUSB plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to back-to-back home runs from Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) and Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.). Mejia hit a three-run opposite field homer over the left field fence, before Hinojosa belted a 1-0 pitch over the center field wall for a 4-0 Coyote advantage.
Cal Poly Pomona plated one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-3, but Hinojosa gave the Yotes a clutch insurance run with a two-out, two-strike chopper over the head of the Bronco third baseman, plating Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) from third to put the hosts up 5-3.
Senior pitcher Benny Olguin (Alhambra, Calif.) did not need the insurance however, as he sat down the Broncos 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to secure the victory for the Coyotes. Olguin went the distance for CSUSB, allowing just one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts in the victory. The win was his fourth of the season.
Garcia was Cal State San Bernardino's leading hitter on the afternoon, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Mejia went 2-for-3 with a triple and the three-run home run for the Yotes. Hinojosa also had a pair of hits for the Coyotes.
The Coyotes and Broncos will return to action for a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Fiscalini Field. First pitch in game one of the twin bill is slated for 12 p.m.
