SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team rallied in game two to salvage a split with Cal Poly Pomona Friday afternoon in a CCAA doubleheader at Fiscalini Field.
Cal State San Bernardino fell 21-5 in game one, before walking it off 4-3 in game two.
With the split, the Coyotes move to 22-25 overall on the season, and 15-22 in the CCAA.
Game 1 - Cal Poly Pomona 21, Cal State San Bernardino 5
The Coyotes broke the ice in the bottom of the second inning, plating a run on an RBI double from junior Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan).Â
The Broncos would take control of the contest from there however, scoring at least one run for the next five innings. The biggest blow to the Coyotes came in the top of the fifth, when Cal Poly Pomona scored 11 times to take a 17-1 lead.
CSUSB scored once in the bottom of the sixth on a Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.), twice in the eighth on a balk and a Garrett Macias (Iwakuni, Japan) sacrifice fly, and once in the ninth on a Vanneste solo homer to right to give the game its final score of 21-5.
Vanneste and junior Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) led the way offensively for the Coyotes, each going 2-for-3. Vanneste notched a pair of RBIs and a run scored, while Hall crossed home plate twice.
Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 4, Cal Poly Pomona 3
The Coyotes rebounded from the lopsided loss in the first game of the day by rallying to claim a walk-off win in the seven-inning game two.Â
Cal Poly Pomona struck first with single runs in the third and the fifth to claim a 2-0 advantage, but the Yotes knotted the score in the bottom of the sixth.Â
Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) drew the Coyotes to within one with an RBI single to right center field to plate Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) from second, before Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) tied it up with a double to left center.
The Broncos got a run back in the top of the seventh on a two-out throwing error, but CSUSB's offense was unphased. The Coyotes quickly loaded the bases without an out in the bottom of the seventh before junior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.Â
After the Coyotes reloaded the bases on a Macias walk, Garcia singled off the base of the right center field wall to score the game-winning run from third base.
The Coyotes mustered only five hits in the win, but four of them came in the final two innings, when they scored all four of their runs. Garcia led the Coyotes with a pair of hits, while he and Del Negro each had a run scored and an RBI.
The win was credited to sophomore reliever Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.), who allowed no earned runs on one hit with two strikeouts to allow the Coyotes to make their comeback bid.
The Coyotes will play their final game of the 2024 season on Saturday afternoon against Cal Poly Pomona at Fiscalini Field. Before the game, 15 CSUSB seniors will be honored for Senior Day.
