Baseball Walks Off in Game Two to Salvage Split with Chico

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team split a CCAA doubleheader against Chico State Sunday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.

Cal State San Bernardino fell 4-0 in game one, before prevailing 9-8 on a walkoff in game two.

With the split, the Coyotes move to 15-17 overall on the season, and 8-14 in the CCAA.

Game 1 - Chico State 4, Cal State San Bernardino 0

For the first time in nearly two months, the Coyotes were kept off the scoreboard in game one, suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Chico State.

Chico State scored one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one of the seventh to secure all the run support their pitching staff would need.

The Yotes scattered seven hits, but no one recorded more than one hit. Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) notched the only extra-base for San Bernardino with a first inning double.

Benny Olguin (Alhambra, Calif.) took the loss for Cal State San Bernardino, despite a relatively strong outing. In seven innings pitched, Olguin threw four strikeouts and allowed three earned runs.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 9, Chico State 8

What game one lacked in offense, game two certainly made up for right from the jump.

Chico State scored three runs in the top of the first, but the Coyotes notched three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to immediately knot it back up. Graduate student Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) opened the scoring for CSUSB with an RBI single through the right side, followed by a Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) sacrifice fly and an Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.) RBI single.

After the Wildcats posted three more runs in the top of the second, CSUSB got one back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Garcia.

Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth, the Coyotes drew to within one on an RBI single from Garcia and a bases loaded walk from Del Negro. Two innings later, CSUSB tied the score on a solo homer over the right center field wall from Garcia.

Chico State reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh and final inning, but Del Negro kept the Coyotes alive by belting a solo home run over the left center field fence to tie the score at 8-8. Two batters later, after a Mejia double to right center, Hinojosa notched a walkoff single to right center, plating pinch runner Takuto Kataoka (Kobe, Japan) from second for the CSUSB victory.

Garcia, Del Negro, and Hinojosa were CSUSB's leading hitters in game two, each recording a pair of hits. Del Negro and Garcia each had three runs batted in.

Reliever John Pfeffer (Riverside, Calif.) was credited with the win on the hill for CSUSB. He threw two innings and allowed only one earned run with two strikeouts in his victory.

The Yotes will travel to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday to begin a four-game set against the Otters. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
