Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped its series opener against Cal State Monterey Bay by a final score of 8-6 Friday evening in CCAA action at the Otter Sports Complex.
With the defeat, the Coyotes drop to 15-18 overall on the season and 8-15 in the CCAA.
Monterey Bay scored first in the bottom of the first inning, but the Coyotes responded in the top of the second when senior Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) belted a solo home run over the centerfield wall to knot the score at 1-1.
The Otters scored once in the third and once in the fifth to go ahead by a pair, but the Yotes answered once again to tie the score. Borst got the visitors to within one by drawing a bases loaded walk, followed by a Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) sacrifice fly that evened the score.
Monterey Bay notched five runs in the bottom of the seventh to seemingly put the contest out of reach, but CSUSB kept things interesting by plating three in the top of the eight to stay within striking distance. Junior Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.) drove in a pair with a base hit up the middle, followed by a Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) RBI single through the right side that cut the deficit to 8-6, but that would be as close as Cal State San Bernardino would get.
Shedlock led the way offensively for CSUSB, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Hinojosa was the only other Yote to record more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in.
Benny Olguin (Alhambra, Calif.) took the loss for the Coyotes, conceding five earned on seven hits over 6+ innings pitched with nine strikeouts.
The teams will play games two and three of their series on Saturday with a doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch in game one of the twin bill is set for 2 p.m.
