SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team was swept by Chico State Saturday afternoon in a CCAA doubleheader at Fiscalini Field.
Cal State San Bernardino fell 9-3 in game one, before suffering an 8-4 loss in game two.
With the defeats, the Coyotes move to 14-16 overall on the season, and 7-13 in the CCAA.
Game 1 - Chico State 9, Cal State San Bernardino 3
CSUSB was kept quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning, when they plated a pair of runs to knot the game at 2-2. Senior Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) opened the scoring with an RBI wall ball double to center to plate Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.), before Borst would score on a RBI base hit from junior Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.).
Chico State quickly answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, and three more in the top of the sixth to take a 7-2 advantage.Â
Cal State San Bernardino got one back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from junior Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan), but that would spell the end of CSUSB's game one offense.
The Wildcats posted a pair of eighth inning insurance runs to give the game its final score of 9-3.
Garcia was the only Coyote with multiple hits in game one. He went 2-for-4 with one run scored and a double.
Senior Luke Hempel (Glendale, Calif.) took the loss for the Coyotes, allowing four earned runs in five innings pitched.
Game 2 - Chico State 8, Cal State San Bernardino 4
Chico State took control of the contest right from the hop, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats led 6-0 after the top of the third, before CSUSB got on the board in the bottom of the frame on a Garcia RBI single to left to make it 6-1.
Borst got another run back for the Coyotes in the bottom of the sixth with a long ball over the left field fence, but Chico responded with a pair in the top of the seventh to claim an 8-2 lead.
CSUSB threatened in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a pair of runs. Borst recorded his second RBI in as many innings with a sacrifice fly to center, before Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.) notched an RBI bloop base hit behind first to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Garcia and Borst each notched two hits on the day to lead CSUSB offensively.
The loss went to freshman pitcher Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.). He allowed two earned runs in five innings for his first loss of the campaign.
The Yotes and Wildcats will wrap up their four-game set on Sunday at Fiscalini Field. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader slated for 11 a.m.
