SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team belted a pair of grand slams on Sunday on their way to a blowout 15-0 victory over Cal State East Bay Sunday at Fiscalini Field.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 19-21 overall on the season and 12-18 in CCAA play.
The Coyotes got on the board first in the bottom of the second, scoring the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout by
Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.). Senior
Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) put the Yotes ahead by three with a two-run single later in the frame.
In the bottom of the fourth, CSUSB broke the contest open with a pair of long balls. Senior
Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) belted a grand slam in the inning, followed by a two-run shot from
Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.), putting the Yotes up 9-0.
Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) scored in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch. An inning later,
Roberto Bueno (Wilmington, Calif.) drove in another on a pinch hit single.
Mejia capped CSUSB's offensive explosion in style in the bottom of the eighth, notching the second Coyote grand slam of the day and giving the game its final score of 15-0.
On the hill, the win went to senior
Luke Hempel (Glendale, Calif.). He tossed six shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out eight.
Mejia had a huge day at the dish offensively, leading CSUSB with four hits in five at bats, while driving in five and scoring a pair of runs.
The Yotes will return to action with a road trip to Sonoma State, starting on Friday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
