Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped a 7-4 decision to Sonoma State in the opener of their CCAA series at Seawolf Diamond on Friday afternoon.
With the defeat, the Coyotes drop to 19-22 overall on the season, and 10-17 in the CCAA.
Sonoma State jumped out front with three runs in the bottom of the first, and tacked on another with a single run in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth, CSUSB plated their first run of the contest with an RBI double from Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) to draw the Coyotes to within three at 4-1.
The Seawolves added two more in the bottom of the fifth to take their largest lead of the day at 6-1.
A Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh made the score 6-2, but the Seawolves answered right away with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame.
The Yotes threatened in the top of the ninth with a pair of runs, but CSUSB could not complete the comeback. Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) scored the first run of the inning on a Seawolves error, followed by a Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) RBI fielder's choice.
Cal State San Bernardino scattered 14 hits in the defeat, led by senior Garrett Macias (Iwakuni, Japan), who went 3-for-4 with a double in the defeat.
Senior Benny Olguin (Alhambra, Calif.) took the loss on the hill for the Coyotes. He allowed five earned over 4.1 innings pitched, with three strikeouts.
The Coyotes and Seawolves will play games two and three of their series on Saturday at Seawolf Diamond. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is slated for 11 a.m.
