SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped a pair of decisions to Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday afternoon in a CCAA action at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUSB was defeated 4-3 in game one, before falling 9-6 in game two.
With the pair of defeats, the Coyotes drop to 15-20 overall and 8-17 in the CCAA.
Game 1 - Cal State Monterey Bay 4, Cal State San Bernardino 3
CSUSB took the early lead with single runs in each of the first two innings. Senior Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) got the Yotes on the board first with a first inning RBI single, before junior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) did the same in the top of the second.
In the bottom of the second, the Otters got on the board with a solo home run down the left field line, and took a 4-2 lead by posting three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Coyotes made a comeback bid in the top of the ninth, but it ultimately fell short. Junior Alec Bressler (Beaumont, Calif.) notched an RBI single in the inning to draw the Yotes to within one at 4-3, but that would be as close as the visitors would get.
Shedlock finished as the only Coyote with multiple hits in the defeat, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Freshman Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.) took the loss for CSUSB, throwing seven innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits. He struck out one in the loss. Senior Matthew Henry (Fontana, Calif.) looked sharp in relief, throwing two shutout innings and allowing just one hit with a pair of Ks.
Game 2 - Cal State Monterey Bay 9, Cal State San Bernardino 6
CSUSB posted a trio of runs in the top of the first inning to claim an early 3-0 lead. Senior Garrett Macias (Iwakuni, Japan) opened the scoring with an RBI single to center field, followed by a two-run double from junior Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) to put the Yotes up by three.
The Otters got back two of the runs in the bottom of the frame to draw to within one. Their offense didn't slow down after one inning, as they would score three runs in the third and four in the fourth to jump out to a 9-2 edge.Â
The Yotes got two back in the top half of the fifth inning on a Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) two-run single to left center to make the score 9-5. An inning later, Eric Aguayo (Riverside, Calif.) posted an RBI on a base hit to center to draw CSUSB to within three at 9-6, but that would be as close as the contest would get.
CSUSB mustered only four hits in the contest, led by Mejia and Ruiz, who each went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
The teams will play the fourth and final game of their series on Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
