SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team took care of business in the final contest of a four-game set by defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 14-6 Sunday afternoon in CCAA action at the Otter Sports Complex.
With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 16-20 overall on the season and 9-17 in the CCAA.
The Yotes stuck first in the top of the second inning. With two down and runners on first and second, junior Matt Gonzales (Glendora, Calif.) connected for a base hit to center, plating the contest's first run and giving CSUSB a 1-0 lead.
Monterey Bay got the run right back in the bottom of the frame, but CSUSB quickly answered right back in the top of the third when senior Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) crossed home plate on a passed ball to make it 2-1 in favor of the Coyotes.
Cal State San Bernardino broke the game open in the top of the fourth by scoring four runs to take a 6-1 lead. Senior Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to open the inning, followed by an RBI single from Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.) and a two-run single to right from Eric Aguayo (Riverside, Calif.).
The Otters got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) notched an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to get the run right back for CSUSB and put the visitors ahead 7-2.
CSUSB tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to seven. Senior Riley Parker (Snohomish, Wash.) connected for a two-run homer in the frame, his first home run of the 2024 season.
The Yotes added five more in the top of the ninth to put the game away. The first CSUSB run of the frame came on a Monterey Bay throwing error, followed by an RBI double from Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) and a three-run blast from Hinojosa.
Monterey Bay scored four times in the bottom of the ninth, but their comeback bid fell far short, as Cal State San Bernardino claimed the 14-6 victory.
Getting the win on the bump for CSUSB was senior Luke Hempel (Glendale, Calif.), who threw seven innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts on his way to his fourth victory of the 2024 season.
Ruiz, Hinojosa, and Parker each notched three hits for the Coyotes in the victory. Hinojosa finished the day with four RBIs, three runs scored, and two walks in the win.
The Coyotes will return to action on Friday afternoon against Cal State East Bay, opening a four-game series against the Pioneers at 2 p.m. at Fiscalini Field.
