Softball Closes Out Four-Game Sweep of Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team finished out a four-game sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon with a pair of CCAA wins at Toro Diamond.

The Coyotes won game one 4-3, before prevailing 5-4 in an 11-inning marathon in game two.

With the victories, Cal State San Bernardino moves to 9-8 overall on the season and 6-6 in CCAA action.

Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 4, Cal State Dominguez Hills 3

Neither team scored until the Toros got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the third inning, but CSUSB quickly answered with three runs in the top of the fourth. Junior Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) put the Yotes in front with a two-run home run, her second long ball of the weekend, followed by an RBI single from senior Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.).

In the bottom of the fourth, the Toros scored a pair to knot the game back up at 3-3 headed to the fifth.

The score was still all even in the top of the seventh, when senior Hayden Greene (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) delivered a two-out, RBI single to third base, scoring junior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) from third base.

Senior Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.) kept the Toros off the board in the bottom of the seventh as the Yotes secured their third win of the weekend. Carlos finished the ballgame with a complete game, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout to earn her second win of the season.

At the dish, Goris led the Yotes offensively with a 3-for-3 performance, with a home run, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Greene posted a pair of hits as well for Cal State San Bernardino.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 5, Cal State Dominguez Hills 4 (11 Innings)

Goris continued her torrid weekend in the top of the first inning, hitting a two-run home run to put Cal State San Bernardino on top by a pair before the Toros even came to the plate.

Dominguez Hills scored once in the first and twice in the second to claim the lead, before the Yotes answered right back in the top of the third on a two-run double from sophomore Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.), putting CSUSB back on top 4-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, an RBI single knotted the game back up at 4-4, where it would remain well past seven regulation innings.

Finally, in the top of the 11th inning, Tosi belted a 3-2 pitch over the right center field wall for a solo home run, which would hold up as the game-winner. The Toros got two runners on in the bottom of the 11th, but could not come up with the tying run.

Brazil and junior Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.) each had three hits in the victory for CSUSB, with Lapeña notching a pair of runs scored.

Sophomore Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif) threw an impressive 11-inning complete game in the win, striking out five to earn her second victory of the season. She closed her outing with seven consecutive shutout innings.

The Coyotes will return home to the CSUSB Softball Park on Friday to open up a series against Stanislaus State. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is slated for 1 p.m.
