SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team doubled up Cal State San Marcos 16-8 Saturday afternoon in a CCAA contest at the CSUSM Baseball Field.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 9-9 overall on the season and 2-6 in the CCAA.
The Yotes and Cougars began a second contest, but it was suspended in the top of the seventh inning with the Coyotes trailing 17-5. A full recap of that game will be posted after the completion of the game on Sunday.
CSUSB got on the board first in game one on a
Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) RBI single up the middle, giving the Yotes a 1-0 lead.
The visitors extended the lead to 4-0 by posted a trio of runs in the third inning.
Garrett Macias (Iwakuni, Japan) belted a solo home run in the inning, followed by a two-run double from
Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.).
San Marcos answered back with five runs in the third and one run in the fourth, but their 6-4 advantage would be short-lived. Giesegh recorded his second two-run double of the contest to knot the score at 6-6 in the top of the fifth, followed by a
Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) bases loaded walk to put the Yotes back ahead.
CSUSB put the game out of reach by posting five runs in the top of the sixth. Borst,
Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.), and Shedlock all recorded RBI hits in the inning, and Giesegh recorded a two-run blast for his fifth and sixth RBIs of the contest.
Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) put an exclamation point on the win for CSUSB with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth.
Giesegh and Del Negro each had huge days at the plate with four hits each. Giesegh had six RBIs and two runs scored, while Del Negro finished with three RBIs and four runs scored.
Senior reliever
John Pfeffer (Riverside) got the win for CSUSB, throwing 5.1 innings of relief work, allowing three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
The Yotes and Cougars will complete their suspended game Sunday at noon, before completing the series 20 minutes after the suspended contest goes final.
