Softball Sweeps Cal State Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team picked up a pair of wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday afternoon in CCAA action at Toro Diamond.

The Coyotes won game one 6-2, before prevailing 9-5 in game two.

With the victories, Cal State San Bernardino moves to 9-8 overall on the season and 6-6 in CCAA action.

Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 6, Cal State Dominguez Hills 2

The Coyotes got on the board extremely early in the series opener, as senior Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) belted the second pitch of the ballgame over the centerfield wall for her first home run of the season. Later in the inning, CSUSB stretched its lead to two on a Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) RBI groundout.

Dominguez Hills got one back in the bottom of the second inning on a Mariah Ramirez long ball, but that would be as close as the Toros would get.

In the top of the sixth, the Coyotes took command by posting three runs to take a 5-1 lead. CSUSB freshman Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to open the scoring in the frame, followed by a two-run single up the middle from Galliano.

In the top of the seventh, the Yotes added some insurance with a Brazill RBI single. In the bottom of the frame, Dominguez Hills scored once on an RBI groundout, but could not cut into the deficit any further, and CSUSB handed the Toros their first league loss of the season.

Junior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) had a huge game at the plate, going 4-for-4 in the victory, while Galliano, Brazill, and junior Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.) each added a pair of hits.

In the circle, senior Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.) tossed a gem to earn her first victory of the season. She posted a complete game, allowing just one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 9, Cal State Dominguez Hills 5

All 14 runs of game two came in the first three innings of the contest as both sets of bats came alive early.

CSUSB opened the scoring in the top of the first on a Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) three-run big fly, her first home run as a Coyote.

Dominguez Hills answered with a single run in the bottom of the first, but CSUSB would score the next six runs of the game to jump out to a 9-1 lead. Lapeña added RBI singles in both the second and third innings, while Tosi put the final nail in the coffin with a two-run double to put the contest out of reach.

The Toros put up four runs in the bottom of the third, but the rally would end up falling short, as both pitching staffs settled in for the final four innings to finish with a final score of 9-5.

Lapeña finished the contest with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Galliano and Goris each had a pair of hits.

Sophomore Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif) was stellar in her relief appearance for the Coyotes, earning her first win of the season. She threw 4.2 shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out one.

The Coyotes and Toros will play games three and four of their series on Saturday afternoon at Toro Diamond. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is slated for 12 p.m.
