Baseball Knocked Off by Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team suffered a 9-5 defeat at the hands of Cal State San Marcos Friday afternoon to open a four-game series at CSUSM Baseball Field.

With the defeat, the Coyotes move to 8-9 overall and 1-6 in the CCAA.

San Marcos got on the board first on a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Coyotes answered with a four-spot in the top of the second to take a 4-1 advantage. Senior Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) tied the game with an RBI single, before junior Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.) put the Yotes ahead with an RBI base knock of his own. Borst and Hinojosa both crossed home plate on a Riley Parker (Snohomish, Wash.) base hit to left field.

The Cougars got one back in the fourth, before scoring five times in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. Garrett Macias (Iwakuna, Japan) cut the deficit to two with an RBI double in the top of the seventh, but San Marcos would put the game out of reach by scoring twice in the bottom of the inning, giving the game its final score of 9-5.

The Yotes strung together 11 hits in the defeat, but left six men on base. Borst, Macias, Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.), and Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) each collected a pair of hits for CSUSB.

Senior Luke Hempel (Glendale, Calif.) took the loss on the hill for the Coyotes, allowing six earned on five hits over 4.1 innings. He struck out seven on the afternoon.

The teams will play games two and three of their series on Saturday. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
