Softball Takes Two at Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team wrapped up play at the Tournament of Champions Sunday with a pair of wins in a non-conference doubleheader against Western Oregon and Academy of Art.

San Bernardino defeated Western Oregon 3-2 in eight innings in the first game of the day, before knocking off Academy of Art 4-2 in game two.

With the victories, the Coyotes move to 16-12 overall.

Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 3, Western Oregon 2 (8 Innings)

The morning session was a pitchers' duel between Coyote senior Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Western Oregon's Alivia Holden, but in the end it was CSUSB that came out on top.

Sophomore catcher Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) got the Yotes on the board first in the top of the second inning when she reached base on a safety squeeze, plating classmate Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) from third base to put the Yotes ahead 1-0.

The Wolves scored their lone regulation-time run in the bottom of the sixth on a Coyote throwing error, leveling the score at 1-1 and eventually forcing extra innings.

CSUSB took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning when Brazill notched a two-run single through the right side, scoring Jonessa Hebreo (San Diego, Calif.) and Natalie Bednarz (Temecula, Calif.) to give the Yotes a 3-1 lead.

Western Oregon got one run back in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI groundout, but the comeback bid fell one run short as Carlos secured her fourth victory of the season.

Carlos allowed zero earned runs in the victory on just four hits, while striking out a pair for CSUSB to improve to 4-4.

The Coyotes managed only five hits in the win, with no one recording more than a single hit. Brazill led the way for CSUSB with two RBIs and a run scored.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 4, Academy of Art 2

The Coyotes used another strong pitching performance in game two to earn the Sunday sweep.

CSUSB took the early lead in the top of the second on a Moite RBI single down the left field line, scoring Hayden Greene (El Dorado Hills, Calif.).

The Yotes expanded on their lead on an Academy of Art throwing error in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.

The Urban Knights got one back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Coyotes put the game out of reach with two runs in the top of the sixth. Greene and sophomore Mia Escujuri () recorded sacrifice flies in the frame that gave the Yotes a 4-1 lead. Academy of Art attempted to make a comeback, but could only push one run across, as CSUSB claimed its second win of the day.

Junior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) tossed a gem for CSUSB, allowing no earned runs on three hits to pick up her seventh win of the season.

Senior Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) and Hebreo were the only Coyotes with a pair of hits on the afternoon.

CSUSB will be off next weekend, before returning to action at Sonoma State for a four game set starting on April 5. Game one of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m
