Softball Splits Doubleheader at Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team returned to CCAA action by splitting a conference doubleheader at Sonoma State University's Seawolf Softball Park Friday afternoon.

San Bernardino fell 6-5 in extra innings in the first game of the day, followed by a 3-0 shutout victory over the Seawolves in game two.

With the split, the Coyotes move to 17-13 overall and 11-8 in CCAA action.

Game 1 - Sonoma State 6, Cal State San Bernardino 5 (8 Innings)

Sonoma State broke the ice in the bottom of the second inning, before the Yotes answered with three runs in the top of the third to take their first lead of the game. Junior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) delivered the big blow in the frame, belting a three-run home run over the left field wall to give the visitors the edge.

The Seawolves got one back in the bottom of the third and regained the lead with a pair in the bottom of the fourth.

Senior pitcher Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.) helped her own cause in the top of the sixth, leveling the score with an RBI single, before Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) gave CSUSB the lead when she scored on a Sonoma State error later in the inning.

A sixth inning sacrifice fly for the Seawolves tied the score back up at 5-5 and forced extra innings.

With two away and the bases full in the bottom of the eighth for the Seawolves, Lauren Mirtoni reached on an error to give the hosts the extra inning victory.

Tosi and Brazill each notched a pair of hits and a run scored for the Yotes in the defeat.

Carlos threw a complete game, allowing four earned runs over 7.2 innings pitched.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 3, Sonoma State 0

The story of game two was the dazzling pitching performance by junior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.). Vargas allowed just two hits in her complete game shutout, while striking out a pair and only walking one. Vargas has now allowed just two earned runs in her last four starts, all complete game wins.

Vargas received her first run support of the contest in the top of the fifth inning, when sophomore pinch runner Natalie Bednarz (Temecula, Calif.) scored on a Sonoma State error.

The Yotes tacked on two more for insurance in the top half of the sixth. Junior Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) notched the lone RBI of the game with a base hit up the middle, followed by a Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) reach on error to run CSUSB's lead to the game's final score of 3-0.

CSUSB notched only five hits in the win, two coming off the bat of Olson. She also stole a base in the victory.

The teams will conclude their four-game series on Saturday at Sonoma State. First pitch in game one of the twin bill is slated for 11 a.m.
