Softball Splits Day One of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team opened play at the Tournament of Champions Friday by splitting a doubleheader against Dominican and #14 Western Washington.

San Bernardino defeated Dominican 4-1 in the first game of the day, before falling 9-2 in game two against Western Washington.

With the split, the Coyotes move to 14-12 overall.

Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 4, Dominican 1

Dominican got on the board first with a single run in the top of the first, but CSUSB immediately answered with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Senior Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) scored on a throwing error to level the score, before junior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) gave the Yotes the lead with an RBI single down the right field line, plating classmate Jonessa Hebreo (San Diego, Calif.).

In the third, the Yotes tacked on another run thanks to an RBI double from sophomore Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.), putting Cal State San Bernardino ahead 3-1.

A Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) RBI double in the bottom of the fifth stretched CSUSB's advantage to 4-1, which held up as the final score.

CSUSB junior southpaw Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) tossed a gem for the Coyotes, allowing just one earned run on five hits in a complete game effort, striking out five batters.

Goris led the Yotes offensively with a 3-for-3 afternoon, including a run scored and an RBI. Tosi, Brazill and catcher Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) each posted a pair of hits in the win.

Game 2 - #14 Western Washington 9, Cal State San Bernardino 2

The Vikings scored twice in the first and twice in the second to take an early 4-0 lead. Cal State San Bernardino answered with one run in the bottom of the second inning on a long ball over the right field wall by Goris to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Western Washington would continue to control the play with one run in the fifth, three runs in the sixth, and one run in the seventh to take a 9-1 lead.

An 0-2 RBI fielder's choice from junior Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) plated senior Hayden Greene (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) from third base, giving the game its final score of 9-2.

For the Yotes, Goris and Greene each recorded a pair of hits, compiling four of CSUSB's six hits in the defeat.

CSUSB will continue play at the Tournament of Champions on Saturday with contests against Academy of Art and St. Martin's.
