SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team closed out its four-game CCAA series against Cal State Los Angeles with a 9-0 win at Fiscalini Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 12-12 overall on the season, and 5-9 in the CCAA.
CSUSB struck first in the bottom of the first inning, putting three runs on the board. Graduate student Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) put the Yotes ahead with a sacrifice fly to right field, followed by an RBI double from designated hitter Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) and an RBI groundout from junior Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.).
The Yotes tacked on two more in the bottom of the second on an RBI fielder's choice from senior Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.). Junior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) also touched home on the play on a Cal State LA throwing error, stretching CSUSB's lead to 5-0 after just two innings.
An RBI single from senior catcher Garrett Macias (Iwakuni, Japan) in the bottom of the fourth inning extended Cal State San Bernardino's lead to 6-0.
In the fifth, Mejia turned around a 2-0 fastball and smacked it off the scoreboard in right for his first NCAA home run to put the Yotes on top by seven.
Back-to-back RBI singles from Matt Gonzales (Glendora, Calif.) and Shedlock in the bottom of the seventh gave the Coyotes a 9-0 advantage.
Senior Benny Olguin (Alhambra, Calif.) was stellar for the Coyotes in the victory. He took a no-hitter into the top of the sixth inning before a lead-off bloop single into left field. He finished the day throwing eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts.
Offensively, CSUSB was led by Shedlock, the only Coyote to record multiple hits. He went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.Â
The Coyotes will return to action next Friday as they start a four-game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
