Box Score CARSON, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team rallied for a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opener of their CCAA series at Toro Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 13-12 overall on the season, and 6-9 in the CCAA.
Down 3-0 entering the ninth, the Coyotes made a furious rally to knot the score at 3-3. Darly Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) drove in CSUSB's first run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A batter later, the Yotes cut the deficit to 3-2 with a Ben Davidson (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) pinch hit bases loaded walk, followed by a game-tying sacrifice fly to center from Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.).Â
The Coyotes needed only one hit in the inning to bring home the three runs.
Senior reliever John Pfeffer (Riverside, Calif.) worked around a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth to send the contest to extras.
CSUSB took their first lead of the afternoon on a two-out RBI single up the middle from Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) in the top of the 10th, putting the Yotes on top 4-3.
Pfeffer slammed the door shut in the bottom of the 10th, striking out a pair to clinch the come-from-behind victory. He earned the win, striking out three in two innings of work.
Mejia and sophomore Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) were the only Coyotes with multiple hits in the contest, as each recorded a pair.
The Coyotes and Toros will play games two and three of their series on Saturday at Toro Field. First pitch in game one is slated for 12 p.m.
